As the BIPOC Outdoor Collective worked to promote our first-of-its-kind BIPOC activation at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE), we intentionally leveraged media partnerships to reach audiences that are often overlooked in traditional outdoor marketing. Through collaboration with SEWE’s media outreach team, Obviouslee Marketing and Public Relations, and additional support from the Cumulus Media radio cluster in Charleston, we secured interviews across local television and radio stations, including Cass of Z93 and Hit Music Now with Johnny O.

These platforms allowed us to extend a direct and personal invitation to communities who may not have previously seen themselves represented at the festival. The impact was clear: Many families and individuals of color shared that they attended SEWE for the first time after hearing or seeing those interviews. This experience highlighted the powerful role media plays in expanding access, shifting narratives, and helping reshape how outdoor recreation and conservation are experienced by more diverse communities.
